Evinrude Voltage regulator

Hi everyone, I have a 1963 40 hp evinrude lark V and it has a bad voltage reguator - can it be replaced with a newer one?

If it has the belt drive DC generator, then I believe that you're stuck with the old mechanical regulator.

I have spent countless hours trying to find a solid state replacement for those. Had several leads, but they all dead-ended. The only possibility that I know of is for some early Harley Davidson motorcycles. Be careful, you need a 10 amp regulator. The higher amp ones will burn up your generator.

Safest and easiest way is just get the right one from an Evinrude dealer. They are about $100.

I don't know anything about it though. Problem is the mechanical ones regulate voltage, current, and sometimes have a cut-out relay to prevent the battery current from flowing into the generator when idling or when the key is off.
