Does anyone know about what year small Johnson outboards started to come in black? I'm looking at buying a used 3hp and the owner can't tell me anything about it. He thinks it is a 2000 + model but isn't sure. I'll post the picture I have here.

Re: When did Johnson start using black paint?

I have a 1996 115 johnson and that is also the charcoal grey color, not sure when they started that, It might have been a option. Here's the code that omc/bombadier uses to identify the motor years from 1980 on up.

I N T R O D U C E S
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

Look at the model number and the second and third letter from the right or end, match up with corresponding number, for the year.

Example: model #J115eledr

So you match up the E and D with the numbers above and it tells you it's 96.

Kudos to knightrider22, it is a 96! Bought it yesterday, nice little motor for $140. It has to be th tiniest twin cylinder I have ever seen.
