On those you need to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift linkage. A pain but it's not as bad as it sounds. You will need a new powerhead gasket and you need to be careful with the lower seal since it sits basically on top of the drive shaft. The proper oem service manual for that engine would be invaluable.

1. Disconnect fuel & air hoses.
2. Remove the vertical throttle control shaft (not necessary, but it makes reassembly easier)
3. Remove the 7 screws holding the powerhead on. Note location of the slightly longer ones.
4. Lift powerhead off.
5. Two nuts with a lockwasher between them hold the shift rod.

When you put it back together, use a new powerhead gasket and a NEW 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring on the carbon seal assembly. That seal assembly is a vital part and must not leak.
