The JW's started at JW-10 in 1952. Are you sure it's a 6?

Look again, it probably is a JW-16, 1960

The only thing older than this dandy 'lil engine is my eyes. It very well could be JW16 or maybe JW 46. Thanks. PS LCDR Navy or Coast Guard? I was Navy.

I've recently been given a 3hp johnson model# JW 23A and serial C558592 can anyone tell me when it was made, I don't know much about boat motors yet, I'm not even sure if it's a 50/1 mix or richer? any help would be great.

JW 23 is a 1968.
Don't know about the oil. My '58 3 hp is 24:1

After 1964 it changed to 50:1, officially. Some folks still run 24:1 on all pre-1970 JWs.

Thanks for info,Whaler & JB.
Now I'm confused, Its a stretch, 24:1 vs. 50:1
Any recommendations, leaner or richer?

Either will work fine, ganguy. If it were mine I would use 24:1 because the JWs still had some non needle bearings in 1968, but I haven't heard of any damage caused by using the factory recommended 50:1.

LOL...That's for sure but it was the only thread I could find on this forum that even mentioned a 3 hp Johnson Sea Horse JW6. Was just reaching I guess.

You could start your own thread.

If you reread the thread and pay attention to the posts, you'll see that there is no such model as a JW-6...most likely JW-16, and that is a 1960.
