gel seal vs permatex 518

I am gonna use permatex 518 when putting the two halvs of my 90 hp rude block together but the 518 directions say to use permatex surface prep on one half of the block before assembely but i cant find this surface prep anywhere is it needed? or do you use something else?

Loctite 518 Flange Sealant PN 8222423 and Loctite 649 Primer PN 21347 come packaged together in the Mercury Marine Flange Kit. MM-92125642, A/K/A Quicksilver 92-12564 2 Loctite Master Gasket Kit.

I just put mine back together with Gel Seal 2... The manual recommends using the J/E primer, but the guy at the shop said nobody has used that stuff in ten years.

I put mine back together and let it sit for about 48 hours (24 is minimum). And I started it up with no problems.

The Primer just helps it to cure faster.

But be sure you get all the old gasket material off first.
