Just changed water pump and filled gearcase on '74 Evinrude 115 hp that has sat for years everything seems ok except for small leak @ lower bearing set screw (small allen screw in right side center of gearcase). I turned screw in about a half inch but it never tightened and still leaks, I'm afraid to keep turning it in. Should I keep turning or apply sealant? Any help?

Re: Gearcase leak at bearing set sccrew

Drain gearcase. Remove allen screw. Clean allen screw and threads in gearcase with acetone or lacquer cleaner. Apply "LocTite Screw Lock" to the allen screw threads, then screw it into the gearcase until it is flush. Let the LocTite dry.

The outer edge of the allen screw should be as above, just flush with the gearcase. Do not screw it in thinking it will tighten up..... it won't.

Note: Originally the solvent was OMC Screw Lock. LocTite may now be calling it something else..... Whatever it's called, you want the type that locks threads.
