tell tale on 3hp evinrude

I have a 1968 3hp evinrude yachtwin. I cant see a tell tale while the motor is running, there is a spray of water being expelled with exhaust gases though. Does this motor have no pee hole, or is my water pump/impeller broken? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't have one.

1978 was when they became standard equipment.

The exhaust relief where you'd actually see water coming out is in the FRONT of the leg, just below the clamp bracket assembly... It'll come out on either side as a heavy mist.
