I Just Purchased A 1989 Model Johnson 200 Gt Powerhead And I Have No Idea What The Model# Or Serial #'s Are Is There Any Way To Look Up The Casting Numbers. The Numbers On The Head Are 333809 And There Are Numbers On The Bottom Of The Block 15g89x And The Top 333619 Do These Mean Anything The Engine Looks Just Like My 93 Evinrude On The Outside Just Need To Know If There Is Anything Different On The Inside. I Am Rebuilding This Motor

Can you see a 'welch' plug, on the top of the motor, between the cylinder heads? It will be about the size of a quarter and shaped the same. It should contain the model number.

Re: 200 Johnson

Silly question.. How do you know it is a 1989??? Quick V-6 history...

1985-87 90degree V-6= 3.500 bore.. open deck design/bridged exhaust port.
1988-92 90degree V-6= 3.685 bore.. open deck design/no finger ports.
1992-01 90degree V-6= 3.685 bore.. closed deck design with finger ports and exhaust relief.
1988-92 models use shorter drive shaft as crankshaft end is longer.
1985-87 small chamber heads= High compression
1988-90 open chamber heads= low compression.. lucky to see 100 psi on excellent cylinder.
91 & up closed chamber heads= good all around head 100 psi and up.
Heads cast at a angle.. so #5 & #6 always few cc"s bigger= little lower compression and cooler cylinder.( Note: all looper heads this way)
1985-91 use heavy rod ...casting #394448
1991 and up use lite rod.. casting #435355
Hope this helps!!!

Re: 200 Johnson

You got a open deck block, open chamber heads, old style t-stat covers, you pretty much got what you paid for. Motor has a lot of hours on it from looks of cylinder wall and pistons. These blocks are prone for excessive wear on exhaust side due to side thrust. If your going to rebuild it bore All 6 cylinders. If you are going to run the heads you have ,install new style t-stats,cover,and T-stat sleeves or find a set off a 95 and up motor. Most hp from the block around 235hp with 225 carbs. Finger port blocks with good heads make about 245 with 225 carbs and stock porting. 225HO blocks start at around 260hp. This is Hp @ powerhead..

Re: 200 Johnson

Thanks for all the info, so looks like the powerhead gasket set from a 1988-1993 should work part # 18-4323 right?

Re: 200 Johnson

That should do it, need to check and see if it comes with crankshaft seals. If not get them also..

Re: 200 Johnson

The 93 heads will have more compression and better cooling.
