Mike, Does that motor have the water cooled voltage regulator mounted behind the flywheel on top of the cylinders? If so, the grey wire is the source of your tack signal. make sure that the regulator and the tach get +12VDC on the purple wire when the ignition key is in the run position. Make sure there is continuityfrom the tach to the grey wire on the Voltage regulator. make sure the Tach has ground as well.
