Hi all, I'd just like to get a specific discussion going on my new-old Evinrude. The serial number is 5602R-E04765, so I believe I have it pegged as a 1966 correctly. I've read various posts about the correct fuel/oil mixture, some saying 50:1, another saying 40:1. The following quote from Chinewalker seems to make a lot of sense:
I've found that the smaller (3, 4, 5, 6hp) motors from post 1964 up into the mid-1970s may appreciate a bit of extra oil as they still have some bronze sleeve bearings.

The reference is http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158072 This is my first boat motor, too. I'm pretty well versed in automotive repair and such, but outboards are a new thing.

OMC's statement was pre 1964 24/1. post 1964 50/1. that was there stand, a little extra oils never hurts, other than the increase in plug fouling.

There's also the richness knob...any idea what to do with that, or general guidelines?

Merely set the knob to where it idles the best and then forget it. The oil issue will never be settled as long as man has the ability to argue.
