At higher RPM I am noticing that the battery gauge is almost peg itself at 20 Volts. The Key switch starts getting hot. Is it the clipper circuit? The power pack is not to old. Were is the voltage reg on this motor? The power pack?

Re: Johnson 72 100hp battery over voltage

Very interesting. Lets start off by saying that the '72 100hp has an unregulated charging system and voltages up around 15-16 are normal. However, 20 volts makes me wonder if you have the optional 15 amp alternator? I'm not real familiar with that one except the parts list shows a voltage regulator mounted on it's own little flat plate. Should be easy to spot.

You say your meter shows 20 volts. The 15 amp alternator kit comes with an ammeter. If that's the case and you are showing 15 amps instead of 15 volts, that would be normal until the battery is up to full charge.

The key switch getting hot is even more interesting. There shouldn't be enough current through that thing to make it hot. And even if there were, it should blow the fuse.

Hm-m-m-m. Very interesting.
