1971 Johnson 50hp adding Telltale - Pee Hole

Okay guys. I did some searching on this site about adding a tell tale or a pee hole, what ever you want to call it, to a 1971 Johnson 50 hp. I found a lot of info on other motors but not my motor. Here are some pictures with an arrow pointing to where I think I can drill and tap a hole for the telltale. Do you think this is the best place or should I drill in to the exhaust cover and if so, where on the exhaust cover should I drill?

I'm not sure but I don't think that is right.

If you wish to add this to your engine, I would say use plate 23? would be more forgiving that drilling the block.

Shearpin - did you mean plate 28, the outer exhaust cover?

yes the outer plate. If you look over some of the other models 110 or 150 there drilled in the outer plates of the exhuast cover.

Okay, if you think I should locate it on the exhauste cover, where on the exhaust cover? The 1971 model has a thermo switch assembly (#32) at the top of the cover. I looked at the diagrams for a 1978 to compare and OMC put the telltale where the thermo switch assembly is located. Can this thermo switch assembly be removed? Is it only for alarm purposes or does it do more than that?
