Replace Johnson/OMC Hydro-Electric Remote Control?

Johnson/OMC part # 385251. The parts for this unit are unbelievable even on eBay. Anyone replace theirs with a new remote control unit of any brand/make? I'm thinking that a new unit might be more reliable than replacing with an old, used unit or "Frankensteining" my old unit piece by piece. Mine is hooked up to a 100hp 1972 Johnson SeaHorse model 100ESL72 that runs strong. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm sure it can be updated with a new control. May have to change the cables though.
Some of the Johnson-Evinrude pros here will chime in on this and give you some advice..

I have a similar situation, but with an Evinrude engine with the Johnson control. What was your final fix? I have found the part, but at $300, I am looking for alternatives.
