It is a 1963 5.5 Johnson.

See if someone who knows the bearings for that year can tell you which ratio on the oil. Paul Moir will know.

Thanks for the info. Runs like a top but didnt notice water from pump flowing so I shut down. Then started looking for answers for that and found this site. Ran across the oil mix ratios and here I am. May have to change impeller in the am, but may have been clogged by dirt dobber nest I found. Thanks again this is a excellent info venue.

Fin,
According to ezeke it's a 1963. Not sure about model. Saw on the forum that older small o/b had different oil ratios which I was un aware of.

my manual says before 1964 is 24 to 1. walmart sells a measuring container, that make mixing simple. use TCW-3 oil .

Re: 5.5 Johnson age and oil mix ?

OMC introduced their own brand of oil in 1964 and at that time they recommended 50:1 using their oil only.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think your 5.5 was originally 16:1 or 1/2 pint per gallon. At any rate, I think you would be perfectly safe using 24:1 with today's TC-W3 oil. If it tears up, don't come blaming me-it was going to tear up anyway. If you object to all the smoke, try full synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil for a lot less smoke. I get mine at Wal-Mart (Castrol).

5302 is the model number, bdstacey and the 'M' is for manufacturing run within the model year.

The issue on oil is that the older models had bronze bearings and needed the extra lubrication.

Thank yall for the help. I would have burned it up. I bet it has less than 25 hours running time on this thing, sounds like it is new, looks pretty good also. Again much thanks and I am sure glad I found this group of informed and helpful folks!
