I hooked up the ammeter to the 2 10 ga wires and the meter goes to the max and the motor sounds like there a heavy draw on it .....I reversed the wires and it maxes out the other way with the same draw on the motor.

I have a diagram and the wire that goes to the rectifier side of the box also has a short lead going to the ignition switch s post....any ideas what this might be.

I has a old dash panel from a old Lyman and hooked it up a few weeks ago and it seemed to work fine....it was a different motor but the same box.

An ammeter does not get connected ACROSS the POS and NEG lines. It gets connected in the POS lead from the between the battery and the alternator. When the system is charging, the ammeter will show + charge rate. When the alternator cannot keep up with demand, the battery supplies the excess and the meter will read - charge rate.
