I am about to replace the starter motor brushes on my Evinrude 40hp BE40ELCR, I have the Clymer manual which shows starter, Are there any problems or anything awaiting me that I should look out for? or is this a straight forward job? Thanks for now. JBD

I did mine last year. It wasn't too difficult.

On re-assembly, put the stator into the housing first. Take a flat piece of metal (something) and form a "U" shape. This is to hold the brushes in place while you slip the stator and housing down onto the brush holder. It's not a hard job as Dave posted.

Also, be sure the stator commutator is clean. You can chuck it up in a drill and use crocus cloth (I think I spelled crocus right) to polish the commutator. Sometimes you may have to use a lower grit paper to get rid of the ridges in the commutator before poishing.

The purpose of polishing is to get a good a contact between the brushes and commutator as possible.

also after cleaning take a pick and cut out the mica between the commutator segments.
arco makes a slick tool for holding the brushes in place but two very clean oil free 1.5" wide putty knives will work. a buddy made a tool with a 4" putty knife with a 3/8" groove cut out of the center.
place all the brushes in the holder, place the putty knife on the holder with the groove over the armeture bushing and push the brushes down. then place the assembled armeture/starter body onto the putty knife/brush holder, now slip the putty knife out. make sure the tabs on the body line up with the notches on the caps. I usually mark a line on the caps and body.
the arco tool does make it a lot easier :)
