Im pretty sure it wont. I have been trying to convert my 1969 18 hp Fastwin to electric start too. The one you need looks like this:

This will replace an existing bracket. There are guys here that will help you locate one.

Thanks!
-Jacob

mfbear,

I am using the bracket, s. motor and wiring harness from my 59 18 horse johnny on a 67 20 horse. Bolted right on. The front of the bracket has the "horn" out in front for the cowling bumpre but does not interfere with the 20 horse cowling, just looks funny. Same wiring harness worked too.

I hate to get off topic, but Iboats member geekomatic is searching for a bracket to fit his '58 18hp. May I ask where you found the '57?

KB,

I would be interested in seeing what your set up looks like, Do you have any pics? Also, is yours mounted in the same location as the one in the pic?

Paul,

I am pretty sure there are a few out there on ebay. Everytime I have searched for one for my motor, I have been able to find older ones that didnt seem like they would fit right for me.

-Jacob

A starter for a 25hp gale ought to be the same as a starter for a '58 18hp or even a '69. Just the bracket is different.
Actually, any of the short starters (the ones without bottom brackets) that were used on the 25/28/30/33/35/40hp engines are identical to the 18/20/25hp starters. I think the longer starters came out in '64 or '65 on those engines. But perhaps even the longer starters would fit too.

Yeah, I understand this. I need the bracket and motor, and I just figured that we were talking about a package (everything needed to bolt a starter onto a previously pull only motor).

-Jacob

I ment to imply that the bracket for the 25hp Gale is different. It goes on the other side of the engine.
But perhaps I'm overlooking something.

Oh, Im probably missing something. In the picture is the way that as far as I know Johnson/evinrude lower hp years ranging from late 60s to 70s mount. I just assumed that Gale is the same way. The late 50s motors have a different bracket, but mount in the same location. This is just my understanding, I am probably wrong.

Re: Evinrude 57 18hp starter/bracket to 68 18hp?

Yes that's right, the 18/20/25hp engines '57-70something (all 22.0 CID) all mount to the port side of the engine. But the 25hp Gale is like the '51-'55 25hp - a 35.7 CID "Big Twin" which has the starter bracket on the starboard side of the engine. It is nearly identical to the 30hp and later 28hp, and shares a lot of the same parts with the larger 33/35 and 40hp engines.
Here's a '55 25hp:
http://www.nymarine.ca/55ev25reassembled.JPG

Re: Evinrude 57 18hp starter/bracket to 68 18hp?

Thanks, and thanks for putting up with a show-off! :)
The motor's for nothing. I just like messing around with old outboards. Call it a winter hobby.
I don't think my engine was ever raced: it's really an econobox. Earlier versions of the same were though.
I guess the 22.0CID engines like yours were. There's some pretty provocative posts by DHadley about them - hopping them up for racing and such. I don't think there was any practical ends though as he indicated they didn't last very long after they were hopped up.
But we're drifting dangerously off topic here. I don't want to hijack mfbear's post.

Re: Evinrude 57 18hp starter/bracket to 68 18hp?

Sorry I'm so slow to respond everyone.Granddaughters DO take priorities whether any man can EVER!! say what they want about females.

Seaking15, Yes, it is mounted the same. No, I have no pics available, but the bracket you will replace has all the same bolt holes as the one you will remove that mount it and anything AFT of the starter motor. This should clear up any question of compatibility that I am understanding in the posting. I also have a 40 hp with the bottom bracket that was mentioned, but I believe, as Paul said, that the 18,20,25 horse all interchange. Also, the hole that the kill button is mounted in is shaped to fit the wiring harness plug-in and the wiring harness is good to 68,69?? Works on my 67 anywho!!
