There were several modifications to the starter over those years, as well a couple of mfrs. Bottom line: they all fit. Use the correct lower support bracket for whichever one you choose.
Think the '50s shorter starters are quite a bit tougher to find. But in any case, maybe getting it rebuilt would be the way to go. Got an old-time shop in the neighborhood? If the sign says "starters and generators," you're in business.
Opening it for cleaning is a DIY job -- brush replacement too.
