I picked up an early 70's Johnson in pieces. There if not a tag on the transom clamp. However I have the numbers off of the core plug. It is 15012 19182. My guess would be a 1970 20hp ?

What colour is this fine motor ?----15012 is listed as a 1953/54 Evinrude.

Sounds like you may have a Johnsonrude, if you think it is a Johnson. Made up from spare parts??

The block is dark green and looks very much like my 72 18hp Evinrude. On my exhaust housing I found some very similar numbers. However these are 18012 19182. So I double checked the plug and it clearly is 15012. Someone at the factory screwed up?

Dark green would be a Johnson color. But 15012 clearly is an Evinrude number. Hate to say it, but it is beginning to look like a chop shop job. Changing parts and serial numbers to disguise stolen stuff. Yes, that numbered core plug on the block is easy to swap without destroying it.

Good call F_R, this motor has been painted several times in it's life (duck boat motor). So I sanded down the hood and found under all the camo, Evinrude blue. Then under that White. The exhaust housing goes down to Evinrude blue over the original Johnson green. Not too worried about her sorted past. I live in a state that doesn't register motors, and I bought from an estate sale.

Next question. Can I measure the bore to determine the motor size?

Of course you can, if you want to pull the head. A 12hp (Gale) is 2-1/4", a 15 is 2-3/8", a 18-20-25hp is 2-1/2".
