1993 Johnson 150 Fast Strike skeg repair?

Hit a rock and busted off about 1/2 my skeg. Got the lower unit housing in at the welding shop they want to know how far I want the new skeg to go beyond the propeller? one inch? I have nothing to measure from old skeg is gone. I would guess just enough to protect the propeller?

Your choice. and yes, its there to protect the prop

If they are just welding on a piece of 6061 plate and shaping they are doing it wrong. Cast replacement skegs are used, obtained several places and welded on. I do it daily.
