For years I have yearly replaced the lower gear unit oil with just normal 80W-90 gear oil. Have not use marine oil. Just replaced the 2 seals on the prop shaft ( seals went due to LOTS of fishing line wrapped around near the seals not because of other failure..
Question is normal 80W-90 oil sufficient to use in the older motors or is there some reason to buy marine oil at twice the price?

I would not run standard gear oil. Marine lower unit oil exists for a reason and its not like it's very expensive. Just make sure you buy the correct lower unit oil, fill it up the proper way and call it a day.

There's nothing wrong with good 'ol Wal-Mart SuperTech marine gear lube. I'd get the marine.
