My 1991 Johnson some times is hard to start. When this happens I take the hood off and turn the lever on the primer solenoid, it starts, then I flip the switch back to normal and all is ok. It seems like the solenoid is working because when it is running I push the key switch and the engine stalls.any ideas?

The primer has to be "ON" while you're cranking the motor over. It's not a push and release deal. Push and hold. Turn key while holding in.

With engine not running, can you turn the key to the "on" position and push the key primer and hear a click from the solenoid? Are you pumping the primer bulb up firm and hard before cold starting?
