Once again I find my self perplexed by something and need advice from the Iboats counsel...

I have a 75 Johnson 25RL75B that needs a new fuel pump. (tried rebuilding it and well... I didn't document the process enough to put it back together with confidence.) The part for it is 388685 which is a square pump. retails for 90 to 110 depending on where you look and if its even in stock. It is listed as the same pump that is used on 1980 through 1987 Motors in 6, 8, 7.5, and 4.5 HP as well as 1960 and 1961 5.5, 10, and 18HP.

The 76 and 77 Johnson 25 Horse is listed as OEM 438556 (Sierra 18-7352). Its basically the same thing but with a triangle on one side. Straight from the Marineengine website: "18-7352 FUEL PUMP Replaces: OMC 438556, 388268, 385781, 394543, 382354, 395713, 398338, 432451, 398387, 433387 For: 25-55 HP 1976-89 (non-VRO)"

On amazon I found a fuel pump labeled for up to 15hp that looks identical to the 388685 one. It has Sierra Part Number 18-7350, and is listed as interchangeable with Evinrude/Johnson 397274, 397839, 391638, 395091, Mallory 9-35350.

so my question to the counsel is... do you think I can use either of the above mentioned pumps on my engine and be okay? both of those pumps are a lot cheaper and in stock in more places.

Thank you in advance.

Any of them will work---IF they will fit in the available space and the hoses point in the right direction. Of course the inlet hose can be rotated to optional directions. Also, note they should be installed right side up.

Awesome. Thank you guys. I wasn't sure if they made the valves bigger for the bigger motors and when I called around I was told the first one is the only one to use but its back ordered. You guys are the best!

Some after market pumps have a thicker base, If your new one has the thick base and does not come with longer screws DO NOT use the old screw. You will strip the bolt holes-then it is new motor time

Well I do not believe you would need to buy a new motor !!-----Replace the bypass cover maybe.

If you decide to use the larger pump there is a restrictor elbow that goes between the carb and the pump.
