Working on my first outboard m..otor and have some questions. I removed the carb to clean as the engine has sat for 3+ yrs. What are the recommended low and high speed needle settings? the low speed was set at 3 turns from the bottom. I am looking at buying a "Evinrude Outboard Motor Carburetor Kit 396701" kit to re install on the carb. Is this the correct kit? Has anyone installed a impeller/water pump on these motors? I haven't checked if it is any good. I ran the motor once but had rabbit ears on it which force water thru the cooling system.not sure if I have a bucket to run the engine in to see if it pumps water.

There is no " warning / shutdown " system on the engine !-------As a new owner step # 1 is a new impeller.

The manual I have for a 1969 model says idle 1 1/4 turns and main 1/4 to 3/8 open, adjust as needed from there. Idle should be around 650 RPM in forward gear. Spark plug is J4J.

My manual says the High speed needle setting is 3/8 to 3/4 open. I would start at 7/8 open and lean it from there.

Tune it in a barrel or in the lake, with water level about half way up the leg. Initial settings are meant to get the motor up and running so you can dial it in. Make adjustments with the motor warmed up and idling in gear -- idle setting first, then high speed when underway (then back to idle needle for final tweaking).

Correct.---------Set high speed first then the low speed.---------But some will argue that I suppose.

no argument on the procedure -- just that initial tuning in a barrel places some limits. Can get it close, then refine on the lake.
