Johnson 9.5 starter recoil problems

I recently purchased a Johnson 9.5 short shaft tiller engine. I went to pull started the string came out and is now stuck. I took the recoil assembly off. I found there is nothing at the bottom to hold the little slot so I can put tension on the spring. My question is does anybody know what goes there to hold the bottom of the starter assembly? Thanks to all

Have about 10 or more of those engines / blocks sitting around.-------I recal there is a roll pin on the block for that.

Do you know what the diameter and length might be. I'm sure it's down in the mid section. Retrieving looks difficult

google a parts schematic for the starter on a 9.5 hp. johnson outboard...
