Hello,

I just picked up a 1969 Evinrude Lightwin 4hp outboard. It starts and runs ok but does not seem to get up to full RPM at full throttle. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a carburetor rebuild or could it be the rich/lean adjustment? This engine also has a high speed knob.

Thanks!

If you suspect a carb adjustment, it certainly is easy for you to try a different setting. Try leaning it out (high speed knob) at full throttle. When you get it too lean, it will conk out. That means back it off toward rich till it runs the best.

The typical problem causing lack of power (like 1/2 speed) is running on one cylinder.

There is a nut around each needle. When you get the needle adjusted correctly, snug up the nut just enough to keep the needle from rattling loose and losing its setting.
