I'm looking at a used boat, a 1989 Starcraft 21' Mariner. The engine is a Johnson GT 100. I'm assuming that the engine is an '89 model is well. The boat is in Michigan, so I'm going to assume no saltwater use and low to moderate hours since it was most likely used in the summer months for the most part. Can anybody tell me anything about the pros and cons about this engine or their own experience with it? I know it's approaching 30 years old, and won't be the most fuel efficient engine around, but would still like some info.

First thing to do is a compression test before you hand over any money.

Well, that's a given, racerone; I'm trying to get info specific to that make and model that would influence my decision. e

I did not know you were going to check compression !-----The GT 100 is a 115 hp crossflow model.-----Enhanced with graphics to make it a " faster motor " than a regular 100 hp motor.----Nothing special in the motor itself.-------Sort of marketing 101.

They are reliable right up until the rings break, then you rebuild it. Parts are easy to get.
