I was testing my engine in a tank today to get the low speed idle set correctly on my 1968 Evinrude 6 hp 2 stroke and noticed dark green oil or something coming from near where the prop is. Is this normal? Could some one explain what I'm seeing?

If any water gets into the gearcase it could mean expensive repairs.--------But it could just be unburned fuel and oil as some goes right through the motor.------That is the concept of operation of a 2 stroke motor.----------To be sure pressure test the lower unit to look for leaks.

Smell the oil, if it stinks it's gear oil, gas and/or oil smell and it's unburned fuel and oil, which is normal. You can pull the lower gear case plug out and look for clean oil, milky means there's water in it.

There is a useful item on the Engine FAQs board concerning oil leaking from around the lower unit.

Well worth reading!
