Backfire

MY 40 hp Johnson backfires violently when at full throttle under high load,would like an idea where to look first tanks dave s.

Is it backfiring or jumping out of gear need a little more info.

Could be a sheared flywheel key on an electronic ignition model too.

Very common description of a motor jumping out of gear, rotating 1/2 revolution and slamming back into gear---then does it again--and again--you get the idea. Seems like the story happens almost every day in the life of an outboard mechanic.

Sorry for the lack of info,I just bought the motor and the seller told me what I said had happened.Its actually an 40 Gale .probably 1960 or 61.Ill get the model when it gets light out. What ever happened it was so violent it broke the transom when it happened,he was pulling a 200lb son on an inner tube when it happened so mabe it popped out of gear I hope I can salvage the engine. THANKS DAVE S
