Considering a boat with a 1998 175 Johnson.
I read in 1998 both carb and fuel injected engines were made.
Is it oil injected? I've read the carb model is super reliable, but thirsty, and the Ficht fuel injection can be problematic.
I've asked seller if it is fuel injected, but I thought the oil injection question would expose my ignorance (and I AM ignorant)...
Anyone with facts to reinforce or refute?
I want to stay away if oil gets pre-mixed with gas.

I have the '98 Johnson 150HPV6, which is pretty much the same motor. They are super reliable, run smooth and drink fuel, like a carb'd 2 cycle motor of 2.5L will normally do. The oil injection is the latest and greatest design and works well. Oil is mixed with gasoline in the main fuel pump, and then sent to the carbs. A boat with that size motor will normally have a large fuel tank, and it is very convenient to let the oil injection mix the fuel for you. You get a fresh fuel mixture at all times.

Thanks, Chris. That puts my mind to rest. The fresh mixture is what I want. I always had grief with 2-strokes when gas & oil were pre-mixed - the mix would go bad quickly.

The seller got back to me - it's the carbureted motor. Setting up a visit to inspect, and if it looks good, a test spin.
I like that the motor is hung off the transom on a bracket - more room inside and less chance of water coming in - I saw several of these where transom height where motor was hung was significantly lower. I could see being at rest fishing and some yahoo would come behind throwing a large wake and pushing in water.

Oh, it's a seaswirl 2150

Is that Seaswirl a walk-around style boat? If so, I would think the 175HP would give good performance.

I have the Seaswirl 2100 Dual Console with a 150HP Johnny. They are well matched, roomy and seaworthy. The motor has plenty of power out of the hole, but lacks top speed. There doesn't see to be a way to fix that. I have come to blame the hull design as having too much weight forward.

The '98 Seaswirl hull is not top notch, but it is serviceable.

Yes. Seaswirl Striper 2150 Walkaround. I would also call it a cuddy cabin. Has a sink. I have seen the same boat with 200HP, but that was a later upgrade. I am not going to waterski, I want to fish. :)
I very much want serviceable. It is a reasonable price, and appears to be in good shape.

Funny, I looked at the same boat, only a 2000, and outboard was in a "well" in the transom, and capacity was 8 people - this one with engine on platform off of transom has capacity of 11 ?!?!?!

Fishing or not, nobody says wishes they had less HP when a storm blows up and you need to go now....lol

Worst yet, slugging your way home thru a following sea....Delaware Bay is bad for this

The bracket adds buoyancy thus the increased capacity rating.

Awaiting test spin on the boat (weather). If I buy it, I'd want owner's manuals on boat and the motor - anyone have ideas on where to get them???

You won't find one for the boat, and even if you did it wouldn't have any useful information it, for the motor you can get one easily.

Not really helpful. I had asked where.

It depends on the manufacturer.

My owners manuals contains model specific wiring and plumbing diagrams along with hose and wireway location and routings. Not to mention fuse locations and values, some troubleshooting procedures for installed options etc.

What boat? You have the exception to the norm, one brand or model supplying a manual with useful info doesn't mean the many hundreds of other brands did. As you should know, people expect something like a car manual, or like what they get with their outboard, not a few generic pages of safety info.

That's what I'd be looking for. Thank you.

Yes, I asked for recommendations - not just look it up on Google. AND, your link is for Evinrude, I asked about a Johnson. IF you have nothing to add, you don't HAVE to post.

Hmmm, come on this forum for free advice and then respond as though you're unhappy about something you had paid for. This is a community of enthusiasts who like to help others when they can. It's a big sandbox and we all try to play nice.

Johnson and Evinrude are the exact same motor, so unless you're looking for the stickers that say Johnson it will be the same motor.

I didn't know that was true in '98. Thank you.

I'm 3 for 4. Guess I better go the the casino.....lol

I've owned 4 boats. All but the first (Citation) came with a comprehensive owners manual.
The Striper, Parker and Grady all have good manuals.

Heck, the Grady came with a three ring binder with the OEM paper work for the installed options
