1975 Evinrude 6HP 6504R Coil Starter Repair

I need to swap starters on my 6HP described above. Does the intake manifold need to be removed to accomplish the task? Or can it be done without removing it ? I checked Leeroys Ramblings but did not get his drift as to whether he was doing it with the manifold off the engine or still in place
Actually my spring retainer is broken on the bottom. It need to be replaced. Can this be done from the top of the starter and just slide down into place? My spring is in place and in good condition.

Don't make a big deal of it, it's a simple starter. Assuming the spring tension is off, remove the two screws at the top (by the pinion), and lift it off.

Follow LeeRoys instructions. He says nothing about removing the manifold.. I don't understand your confusion!

You need to know the correct number of turns to pretension the spring when reassembling.
