After running the motor for the summer, and knowing the timing was off (deliberately retarded), I took the time to do the Joe Reeves static timing test today.
Pulled all the plugs, grounded 2,3 and 4, set #1 plug in place, shell grounded and attached the timing light. Initial spin showed timing was about 22 degrees. Setting for my motor is 28 degrees BTDC, so I moved the stop screw until I got 24 degrees. Easy. Peasy. Of course, this test does require you index the timing pointer so you can be certain of your settings.
Took the boat out for a spin and it jumps out of the hole even better, and cruises even faster. Now, for that 19" prop.
