Hey i just bought a 1957 evinrude fast win 18hp that has been sitting for a while. I got it to run, but when im out on the water it the whole thing hits hard and makes my 16 ft aluminum shake when it hits. I dont think its the engine because runs and sounds solid. So i think its in the lower unit. Can anyone help. Thanks

Your clutch dog/forward gear is worn. Common from improper shifting or poor alignment. The skeg will have to be removed, to change out the dog. Inspect the gears as well while you have it open. Might also be a good time to re seal the gearcase.

If it sounds/feels like you're hitting a log, it's like Hightrim says, you've got a worn clutch dog/forward gear.

Some parts are. They changed gear styles along the way and propshaft splines at the clutch dog, too. It's better to exchange the innards as a set for some units in that series.
