Three Johnson Journey

I recently sold my 1976 25 horsepower motor and what's that money I purchase 3 motors for my neighbor who was cleaning out his garage. the first motor was a really nice 1970 6 horsepower Johnson that so far has no problems. it's super clean runs great spits water just fine, compression was 82/80. over all a great motor. the second motor is a 15 horsepower 1988 Johnson that would not start. the third motor is a 1970 9 .5 horsepower Johnson it started and ran good but beyond that I knew nothing about it.
I figured out the 15 horsepower wasn't starting because the choke knob was put in upside down that was the first part of the problem the second part of the problem was the safety stop switch on the tiller was activated and didn't have the clip in it so once I cleaned out the car but they fix the choke lever problem and put in the clip it started and ran great but in the bucket I realize that it wasn't spitting water so I took off the lower end and am ready to put in a new water pump.the compression on this motor was 105 / 102.the 9.5 horsepower looks like it had some water inside the cowl and sat for a while. Compression was only 62/60. I'd like to tear a motor apart and learn how it works piece by piece. I have only basic knowledge of motors, never messed with a carb or piston and rings or whatever other problems might come up. With the corrosion on this engine I think it would be a nice project to tear apart and clean everything since I have next to nothing in it.
Any pointers on where to begin? I'll post pics of the three. First the 6, then the 15, and finally the 9.5.

Well first of all, :welcome: to iboats Waterwhippin. Great to have you aboard and with project engines as well...

Seem you made a good deal if the cost was right. They look pretty nice. My suggest is to buy the manufacture, engine, year, and model specific shop manuals for all three engines. Those manuals have everything you would ever want or need to know about them. It is a must for those engines especially if you have to open any one of them up for repairs. Secondly, understanding you have no real knowledge about 2-cycle engines and carbs, those shop manuals will go over everything about cleaning and adjusting the carbs. They even cover 2-cycle theory and how the engines actual work. :thumb:

I would suggest buying new water pump impellor kits for each and installing new ones regardless how well the seem to be peeing/spitting. Because the fact that they have set for who knows how long, the impellors could be really to fail. Good insurance to change them with fresh new impellors. Also change the foot oils and fuel lines as well. I'd even rebuild the fuel pump diaphragms too. Clean the plugs as well or change them. All those parts are fairly common and certainly go a long way to making those engines run properly again. JMHO!

Those 9.5's only run about 60-70 lbs of compression, so probably no worries there. The 6 will be the easiest to work on by far. Almost all the parts are still available for all 3, Iboats or the dealer should have all the wear parts on hand, and everything else can be found with a little online scrounging.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a new prob on the 15. I went to replace the water pump and when I went to put it back together noticed the shifter rod that goes from the bottom to the disconnect was bent. Is there any way to get it out and straighten it?

Depending where it is bent, you may have to disassembly the foot. Post a picture or three so we can see what you are dealing with. Pictures are always welcome on these forums and convey a lot more then typed words can lots of times. JMHO!
