Let me try this is had the boat in the water 3 years ago and it worked fine. My grandkids was playing with the throttle friction on the shift lever now we can get it to start and idle but when you bring the throttle level down to put it in gear the engine dies. Any ideas?

Before you go messing with the linkage, try adjusting the throttle cable and idle speed screw (at the motor)

To clarify, with the boat in the water, disconnect the throttle cable and adjust the idle speed screw for correct idle RPM. Then reinstall the throttle cable and adjust it if necessary. Always adjust the controls to fit the motor, never adjust the motor to fit the controls.
