The water intake was sheared off and has left a clear hole. Is there anything i can do to patch it up or is this going to need to be completely replaced?

The lower unit still looks to be in good shape with no water contaminating the oil.

You really should install a stainless pin.---You risk loosing the prop as it is.

Is that a 6? 25? There's a screen and plug that go in the hole at the back of the exhaust outlet.

No Title

I don't see where it is "ripped off". But it may be broken or cracked out of view of the picture. What is important is that the water passage is not cracked, especially cracked through to the exhaust passage. If it is, it will suck exhaust gasses into the water pump intake and fail to pump properly.

You really ought to replace a part that is broken like this anyway.

It's a 25. The screen and plug are both still in there.

So that is supposed to be open like that? I thought the exhaust was just below the motor.

There is another part that's broken on the inside and when i look through i can see the shift rod.

I see a corner of the anti-cavitation plate broken off, and a couple of cracks in the exhaust port. Like F_R says, any crack that goes between the exhaust and water intake is a problem.

Here are some more pictures for reference. The close up picture is the best shot i could get of inside water intake; the camera wasn't able to see the shift rod but i can definitely see it moving.

Check your gear oil, that milky white substance in the photo can be from a leak from the gearcase

That big open hole is the underwater exhaust outlet, and yes it is supposed to be open. The smaller blow hole higher up is an exhaust relief to relieve back pressure for easier starting and better idle, also for an outlet for part of the cooling water. The rest of the cooling water goes out with the underwater exhaust.

Yes, the shift rod would be visible by looking up through the underwater exhaust outlet. Moral: Don't look up there :>)

Do as you want, but I won't advise anybody to go out on the water with a motor damaged like that. It may very well have bent the housing, and if it did it will break the drive shaft (sudden dead-in-the-water failure). Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but give it time and it will.
