Hello all,
I have a 1987 20 hp evinrude outboard motor and when shifting from forward to neutral the shifter lever broke off in my hand . I have purchased a new lever but cannot figure out how to get the powerhead removed to install the new shift lever . The lever broke where it enters the side of the motor .From what I can tell I need to lift the powerhead to remove the old lever and install the new .Any advice out there ?
Thank you

Remove the bolts visible on the underside of the powerhead tray. There are also two nuts on either side, inside the tray near the centerline of the motor. They are tricky to reach. I have a garage-sale purchased 1/2" box end wrench that I heated up near the end with a torch and bent to about a 40-degree angle to reach them. You will also have to disconnect the throttle cable, kill button wiring, fuel hose (just remove the cap from the pump) and the pee-tube hose. There may also be a ground strap between the pan and the powerhead, near the fuel connector.
