I have a 1989 TE40ELCEO evenrude equiped with a warning beeper. With the motor on a muff running at idle no beep but if I speed up the motor the beeper comes on. I mix my fuel with a 50:1 ratio and have never had problems before.any advice will be appreciated. thanks PS The water output stays cool.

Welcome to iboats Walt,

that could be a sign of the water pump failing/over heating motor. As learnt on this forum, muffs force water up through the pump indicating that the pump would be working when really its not. You'd be better served testing in a tank or water body.

Better yet draining the lower unit oil for signs of water, and perform maintenance on your pump.

This post will most likely get redirected to the Johnson/evinrude page of the forums.

Change out the impeller. If it still beeps note the tone i.e. Is it a solid tone, rapid beep or beep every twenty seconds or so.

Assuming vro disabled as you mentioned you mix the fuel. Is the oil line pluged or did you switch to a diaphragm style pump?
