I need to replace a piston on a 1996 Johnson 130HP. I have heard this can be done without removing the powerhead. Can anyone tell me how?

I heard of mechanic doing it too. A few minutes after starting the engine it threw the rod. Pull the powerhead and do it right

Removing the controls would be easy compared to trying to assemble an engine through an intake passage. It is not possible to do it properly, and expect it to run. Right now you are looking at 1 piston, 4 sets of rings, possibly 1 cylinger boring, 3 deglazing. Try to shortcut it, you will be looking at a new powerhead. To install it, you will still need to remove the controls
