got a 1977 35hp Johnson model 35EC77C. it has a black plug harness with the key on the dash. starts right up and runs great but won't stop running when I key the key off. have to choke it to get it to stall out and quit.

I believe the kill wire should be black/yellow. If possible trace that wire to see if there are any breaks. Or maybe the key switch is bad.

Also the key switch has to have a good ground to kill the engine.

I've seen a two cdi boxes over the years that lost the kill circuit function, but otherwise worked normally..if everything else checks out, look there. If that's it, you could just set the throttle bottom stop so that throttling down all the way kills the motor, in lieu of buying a new cdi..

using the black plug harness with another ground wire to the battery worked. I've tried two other control boxes with red plugs and neither would shut it off.

Thanks for letting us know. It's always nice to hear how things turned out.
