i have a 1980 (or around that year) Johnson 90 v4, when the boat is throttled up, the starter gear contacts the fly wheel just enough to create sparks. The starter engages fine. The gear appears to slide up the shaft, thus allowing contact between the parts. i have recently replaced the starter gear and the fly wheel. it seems as if something may be slightly misaligned? any ideas/tips/help?

Yes, i did... i am thinking i need to shim the starter a little to get it aligned?

Make sure the starter solenoid is releasing after starting. I've seen old solenoids with burned internal contacts-keep power to the starter after the key is returned to the "run" position. It can keep it in contact with the underside of the flywheel. Happened on my 79 85 hp.

the ring gear will go completely to its stationary position, but when the boat is all of the sudden punched, it slides up and makes contact with the under side of the fly wheel.
