1968 Evinrude 33hp electrical

I just got an older 1970 Larson Lapline with a 33 hp evinrude outboard. im in the process of re wiring the engine (it was a real rats nest). i have a diagram and am making quick work of most all the repairs save for one. My electric start model has a generator which was not hooked up, on the wiring diagram in my service manual it shows a voltage regulator but i cannot find anywhere a part number and the regulator is gone. im hoping the CDI-1933408 will work as it has all the same color wires i need but i have no idea as to all the specs on needed regulator hope someone out there can help.

????---------Your motor would have a belt driven 10 amp DC generator.-------You need the correct voltage regulator as found on the 40 hp electric shift models from 62 to 1970-----Accept no substitutes !

I am aware I need the correct voltage regulator I just havent found any information on what the voltage is. thats why i posted the question asking for specs. thank you for the info about the 40hp models ill look into that and see what i can find

The generators and the regulators were notorious for failing. Well, the one on my dad's 1963 40hp electramatic was. After rebuilding the generator and replacing the regulator, we just removed the belt and recharged the battery whenever it had trouble cranking the engine. The electric shift didn't draw much current and would work for several hours past when the battery couldn't crank the engine

Might look for regulator PN 0381537, around $150. The belt will run upwards of $80 (and they break!)

If your motor is a manual shift model, I wouldn't worry about having a working generator. The electric shift models had them because the motor wouldn't shift if the battery went dead. A manual shift motor is not battery-dependent, and the battery is only used to start the motor. It doesn't take much juice to start the motor, so an occasional charge (once a month or so) will probably do.

Thanks Lindy, I do have a manual shift so i was thinking of going this route. i guess if the battery dies out on the lake all i have to do is use the pull starter. At what voltage is it time to put your battery on the charger?

Not sure of the voltage - you may want to consider a small solar trickle charger if you're worried about it. I had one mounted on the back of my pontoon, and didn't have to charge the battery all summer.

I see your question didn't really get answered, except to talk you out of it (maybe justifiably so). But for your information, I submit the parts list.

Also, there is a solid state regulator made for certain Harley Davidsons that will work with some mounting modifications. I have the info somewhere if you are interested.

The regulators are pretty rare, but out there in a few sources -- think you will find that the original PNs are changed to 0383609 (if that is still current). Price is about what I described earlier for a new one (recommended, IMO). I would balk more at the cost of a NOS belt -- might want to look for one on a donor motor somewhere, if you have a marine boneyard available.

uh, oh. No excuse now, jmatoon. Gotta make it work.

HAHA! Well I found the regulator for $40 and i already have the belt so im good to go now. Ill probably check out F_R's polybelt site and get an extra belt just for good measure. You guys are awesome!
