Hi Guys

With the motor rebuilt early last year all was going sweat until now, last month the motor dropped a cylinder in rough weather at low RPMs, once home we did a check off plugs and leads before finding a coil not reading right, this was replaced and all sweat again.

last Friday heading home in rough chop it happened again, other side of motor and another coil has dropped, all four were replaced with the rebuild along with the CDi power pack unit.

Any one come across this before, after market coils....CDI on its way our....mate mentioned to check charge in battery....any checks to determine whats causing this ?

Any help appreciated

The charge in the battery has nothing to do with the ignition coils at all.---12 volts is not used to generate spark on this motor.---I would check / replace the plug leads as they can short out to the latches of the cowling.

When ignition systems get old weird things happen, test all the ignition component's you can or if you know somebody to help you.

Check all the electrical connections, where the wire enters the crimp down connector, give them all a tug and a twist are they sound and tightly.

I don't know what powers the coils ? is it the cdi burning them up ? I would test the CDI,are you sure the coils and cdi are the correct parts.

I wouldnt trust aftermarket ignition coils (unless they are made by CDI) I put brand new aftermarket (ebay) coils on my motor a few months back and blew one the FIRST trip that I made out. I have heard this from many others and I think I will stick with OEM when it comes to the coils.

Your friend might have been onto something. Is the battery being charged? tach working?

Stator or rectifier/regulator problems might be relevant to your ignition problems, if indirectly. The troubleshooting guide in Sutor's link is a good source for testing. (Do a visual check for any leaking at the stator.)

I would check the pack output at the primary side of the coil.
