Bill, If you have a Johnson/Evinrude dealer nearby, why not get a tune up kit that also has the condensers?I'd also replace the plugwires and the ends.If the coils even LOOK like they might have cracks, replace them too.(in pairs).

This way when you put the flywheel back on,everything under it will be new,and not a problem. And you haven't spent much over $65.00.And you won't have to go there again, for a couple years

DHP

I would echo DHPMarine's comments. I just wanted to point out that 18-5156 is a single point set - you'll need two. 18-5006 is the ignition tune up kit, consisting of two point sets and two condensors. The Johnny/Rude dealer ignition tune up kit comes with a new wick while the aftermarket one only comes with a couple vials of grease.

Good luck!

Thanks paul you pulled my hide out of the fire on that one. Had a brain cramp I guess.
Those guys are absolutely right about this get the tune up kit and do it right the first time.

Those brain cramps must be contagious -
I have all the necessary equipment for testing condensers, so on a recent project I tried to save a dime by just replacing the points. Four weeks later, I got to look real smart pulling a single set of points (18-5156) out of the shipping box...
Hopefully this will save Bill from having to perform that brilliant maneuver.

Brain cramps all around. That motor didn't use that magneto. I think that magneto came out around 1954. It's points don't resemble those mentioned in any way. I doubt they can be had. They aren't rocker points, they're pushrod points and were rebuildable. You'll probably have to clean them up and reuse them. Fine grit wet/dry sandpaper works very nicely.

Here's a list of parts and numbers straight from a QD-10 manual...
(I have an original and no you can't buy it)
580016 Breaker Assy 2.75
375134 Spring & Point Assy .30
300153 Condenser .90
580040 Coil

Hey, I found a 55 year old printing error. The coil wasn't on the price chart. Not that it matters much. Those are 1950 prices. I expect they've gone up a tad. ;)

Later QDs did use the newer magneto. I suppose it could be retrofitted, but I can't guarantee that. Then parts availability is no problem. Do you have the upright pressure tank? Those are quite rare.

Here are some more numbers that might be of some use...
301862 Head Gasket .35
375638 Impeller 1.10
301923 Shear Pin .05
301821 Double Line Hose 4.95
301824 Fuel Connector O-ring .10

It might be difficult to supercede these, but I believe the double hose fuel line and fuel connector o-rings are still available.

I found out that the motor is a 1949 NOT a 1950. Does that change the part numbers?

The book said QD-10 and QD-11. The book before it just has QD on it and it has the same magneto. Numbers should be good, but I doubt any are still available. But you never know when you'll find one in an old dealer's parts department with a whole lot of dust on it.

Re: 1950 Johnson QD-10 Points

The QD-10 had no changes between 1949 and 1950, so the model number didn't change either.

Good thing you were looking over our shoulders WillyBWright! Looks like we were all heading down the path toward a major screwup. I must try to be more careful.

QD-10/11 link.

Points source. 580016

Re: 1950 Johnson QD-10 Points

I have the same motor and need to replace the points, but I'm not sure how the motor cover comes off. It looks like it's 2 pieces. I took the screws out, but no luck. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks!
