Looking at one. I know the 79 has mechanical but was not sure of the 78. I don't want the extra headache of the hydro shift and it possibly going.

For what it is worth, my understanding is that the hydro-mechanical shift is considered to be slightly more reliable due to more robust gears/shafts and the lower chance of a slow mechanical engagement of the dog clutch. This is for the v-4 85 hp and up, it may not apply to inline 70 hp and under. However parts are are harder to find and can be more expensive.

?????---The 3 cylinder motors used the same size gears for many years from 68 and much newer motors.-------Same goes for the V-4 gears , they were the same size for many years as well.----All Hydro-electric and Hydro-mechanical units are very robust and very reliable too.
