How do you decide what hole to install the thrust rod?

I removed the thrust rod from under my power trim for my Evinrude 1984 E115TLCRD to help facilitate the necessary removal of the power trim unit for motor replacement. While the unit was out I cleaned and repainted the housing and brackets holding the unit. Now I can't remember what hole to re install the pin called the "thrust rod". From it's name I suspect it is where the motor ends up with the trim all the way down, but not sure. How do I decide what hole to install this rod?
thanks

I've run mine in the most inward hole for 33 years. Unless you have an extra high transom angle, that's a good minimum. I even have transom shims to tilt the motor down a bit farther as my boat is a lower angle transom.
