I read somewhere that Tohatsu is discontinuing manufacture of their 40/50 hps TLDI motors in favor of 4 strokes. Is this correct? If so, what is the advantage of a 4-stroke system over the TLDI motor?

TLDI motors are lighter and have better throttle response compared to their 4-stroke counterparts. They are also less expensive.
4-strokes are very quiet and smooth, and the EFI models are easily as economical as the TLDI, but they weigh more, and cost more.

At this time, I am unaware of plans to discontinue the MD50.

Would not surprise me. The new 40 and 50 four strokes weigh only about 5 lbs more than their TLDI counterparts and are supposed to provide higher speeds and better torque. I was considering the new model, but it is so darn ugly!
