I'm picking up one of these and it is manual start. Was wanting to change it over to electric start. I know i need a starter, rectifier, and a solenoid. What else do i need? Does anyone have pics of an electric start assembly or the schematics to hook one up? I know i'm a newb and can use all the help i can get.

Thanks Roy Schmidt.

I'm guessing you have the MFS18B2, right? That motor was based on the same frame as the older 9.9 and 15 of that era. Today, the 9.9 is no longer made, having been replaced by the 9.8. The new 15's share the same frame as the newer 20's, but they are a completely different block from the older models. There is a kit for the electric conversion of your 18, but few people would install it, as it involves a lot of small parts, and is rather pricey. Your motor already has an alternator, but would require a rectifier, in addition to all the starter bits.

If you do want to get a kit, you would order 3R3763002M, ELECTRIC STARTER KIT (F) 4 STROKE 9.9/15/18B, $602.18 msrp, available from any dealer, including me. Figure it could discount to about $500.

That includes all of these parts:
3C8-76010-1 *STARTER MOTOR 1
910103-5825 *BOLT 2
3R3-76009-0 *STARTER MOTOR BAND 1
3C8-76007-0 *STARTER MOTOR DAMPER 1
910103-5818 *BOLT 1
3H8-76040-0 *STARTER SOLENOID 1
3V9-76060-0 *RECTIFIER 1
910103-5625 *BOLT 2
3V1-76120-1 *BATTERY CABLE 1
3B7-76145-0 *TERMINAL CAP 1
3R3-76141-0 *STARTER CORD 1
3A3-76145-0 *TERMINAL CAP 2
3V9-76062-0 *FUSE CABLE 1
910103-6612 *BOLT 1
910113-0630 *BOLT 1
398-06972-0 *CLAMP 6.5-67P 1
3H6-63619-1 *COLLAR 6.5-10.5-10 1
398-76080-0 *NEUTRAL SWITCH 1
398-76083-0 *NEUTRAL SWITCH ACTUATOR 1
361-76026-0 *MAIN SWITCH 1

At this point, it may well be a better financial choice to get a different electric-start motor... say a 20, and sell your rope-start model to someone who prefers that setup. If you do decide to get the kit, drop me an email at the office: paul@obersheimersails.com, and we can help you.
