nissan 2 stroke tach

i have a 1989 ns40c two stroke with remote control. i would like to know how to wire it to a mercury 40 hp two stroke tach of the same year. i have a pontoon barge with all the mercury gauges and would like to wire up the tach. is it possible and if so how would i do it. ? i bought the tohatsu/nissan manual but it does not have any wiring diagrams . thanks in advance

The Factory service manual has wiring diagrams. What manual are you using?

im using the tohatsu outboards 1&2 cylynder models service manual.p/n 003-21035-1 . it does not have wiring diagrams in it.

That manual has diagrams on pps. 7-7, 7-8, 7-25, 7-26, 7-27, 7-28, 7-29, 7-30, 7-32, 7-33, 7-36, 7-38, 7-41, 7-43, 7-45, 7-46, 7-48, 7-50, 7-52, 7-53, 7-62, 7-63, 7-65, 7-66, 7-68, 7-69, 7-70, 7-71, 7-72, 7-74... and these are in addition to the comprehensive diagram in the owner's manual.

im looking for a set of functioal diagrams not component level diagrams. im trying to wire my tach and need to know where to find the sence wire. looked at the owners manuals you described and coul not locate the wiring diagrams. thanks.

The complete wiring diagrams for the 40C are on pages 45-47 (the end) of the owner's manual at http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/own_man_pdfs/Toh40C.pdf

Apparently the newer Japanese manuals don't retain the wiring diagrams.

BTW, the tach connects to the white and yellow wires.

And it is very unlikely that the tach will work on that engine. 99 times out of a hundred the engine pulse is too much for a tach of that era.
