heres deal i got elec start 18hp nissan its been great but this year started something new it runs great with no hood all power is there but when hood is on it runs high rpm then steadly slows to slow idle never dies and un latch hood and pull it up here comes power back i have had carb cleaned and even replaced whole carb and cleaned it too no change tank is good and my mechanics tank good we stumped never seen this before any help will be greatly appreciated

Possibly an exhaust leak at the base gasket, or the cowling may have a restriction in the air passages.

Might be a bad spark plug wire grounding to the cover latch...I've had that happen on a handful of engines in the last 45 years.

Wrap both wires with several rounds of 3M electric tape, start from lower plug connectors going up to ignition coil, tape mostly the part that has no sleeve protection, check with cowl on.
